also, demoted: where are your sources with this "shelf-life". i believe lasers last long longer than you think, i remember having this old ass computer with the cd-rom being super ancient; yet worked fine after all that use.
i realize its for a different application, but i still have more faith than you. perhaps im wrong, but would love additional information to help us all GOD BLEZZ
Plenty of people claiming they get errors after a few years. Disc read errors, slot loading errors, and various other ones. I can't necessarily cite them since I don't have the time, but there's enough of them that pop up here alone to make me apprehensive.
My cdj 200's are already starting to have issues with them after 5 years of usage. Discs have gotten lodged in there, the slot loader is sounding tired and wonky, and it takes a while for them to fully load the cd (as in read the tracks and auto-cue).
They will die. They will die quicker than a Technics. And it'll be harder to repair than a Technics. And probably more expensive to repair when compared to a Technics.

This CD is loaded with uplifting, energetic, blood moving tracks intricately mixed with angelic perfection. From that moment on, I could feel the magik flowing through my veins while listening to the music that Tijs carefully samples and produces. His creativity allows him to develop the concepts of songs that bring life and energy to people around the world.

I don't know if I'd say they will "DIE" after a few years. My CDJ-1000 MK2's are 4 1/2 years old and still work and look like new, but they have only seen usage by ME.
I'm playing on an MK2 and an MK1 this weekend at a club. The MK1 is noticeably beat up, it still works but you have to be gentle with it. If you hit the cue button too hard, it'll skip to the next track.
CDJ's CAN be repaired... but it'll cost you. This particular club has rebuilt a few of it's CDJ's several times. It's still cheaper then buying new ones.
Technics last forever because there's not exactly a lot of technology in there to break in the first place.

I don't remember saying they'd die after a few years, simply that they'll die muuuuch quicker than a Technics. I only want to spend that kind of money once if possible. I wish I had gone with vinyl from the start but at least I can be happy knowing that when my cdjs die I'll have decks that should presumably last me forever.

I don't get it dude. Don't ask for opinions if you're worried about hearing things you don't wanna hear. We're only trying to help based on personal experiences.
Sounds like your mind is already made up on the mk1.

naw fuck that old shit. there is a certain financial threshold i've set for a cdj, that im willing to let break based on supposed breakdown facts. going with either a cdj200 or a 800mk1 if i can stumble upon one.

last time we did that I didn't feel as though the ambiance was truly fitting. I'm bringing rain boots and a dreamcatcher this time. A used dreamcatcher that's already caught all those dirty, saucy dreams.
