They used to be considered one in the same. But since the invention of the internets, there is a clear distinction between 'nerds' and 'geeks' when you talk about stereotypes.

Geeks, for instance, generally focus all of their attention on one subject or task, like bug-collecting or World of Warcraft. They believe they are smart because they know a whole lot about some subject or another that no one else cares about, and so they feel that they know things that others do not. Geeks are generally clueless about how the real-world works, have unmistakable social retardation, and likely refuse to bathe because they don't like the feeling of clean skin. An example of a geek can be found in the quote above.

Nerds, on the other hand, are usually highly intelligent, and therefore are not amused by the same mundane things as men of the 'jock' stereotype. They like reading, the internetz, and video games, on top of the many, MANY other interests that pop up on a day to day basis. Nerds are not clueless about the outside world, they just don't care about it all that much, and often use and abuse it to achieve their wants and goals. They are often mistaken for people with social retardation, but the truth is, they just don't like you, or very many other people for that matter. When they decide they actually CARE about getting a girlfriend, they will study the subject for a week, go out, find a girl, get married, make money, support their family, and live happily ever after. Krypton is a possible example of a nerd.

I always think of geeks and/or nerds as types with drive and motivation, or people with a strong focus or passion for something. I can see why those qualities relate to intelligence, and I personally like ANY person with those traits. Isn't it obvious that that should be more attractive than somebody with no goals or strong interests in, well, anything?

Nerds do care about the outside world, though it varying degrees.

Political nerds, those that study politics are much more extroverted than other nerdly people.


But yea, its generally they don't like people around them, the are kind of stuck up. People have said that about me. Unless I really get to know someone I usually tend to think less of them. Its not a good trait...

I can relate, I've always been keen on learning what is obscure, difficult, creative, and those other subjects that might be regarded as cult material (for lack of a better term), travelling and experiencing different regions of the world have broadened my horizons. In school, I've taken classes which are not directly related to my degree; but for me, learning is about exploring boundaries and stepping out of your comfort zone. When it comes to personal relationships, I tend to keep friends who I consider to be smart and that might teach me new things, while sharing different perspectives about various subjects in life; specialization is for insects, a mind is a terrible thing to waste. In addition, I can be a **** to people who I consider of 'lesser intelligence' e.g: slylee or rose
