Ice hockey would be a better sport if you could see what the fuck was happening.

What, do you mean zooming out from the puck a little to watch how the entire team is playing? Such as how players react to their teammates movements and the position of the puck, rather than zooming in on the guy with the puck?

I saw it on the news a few years ago that sports networks were experimenting with putting visual effects on the puck so it would be easily distinguishable. The thing is too fucking small. The only way you can see it is, as you say, zooming right in on the player in possession. There's no visual spectacle in the game. That clip of the guy scoring with some outrageous flick was impressive... when I finally caught what he'd done on the fourth replay.

They've put that into effect a while ago, actually:

I'm not sure, however, as to what extent this technology has been implemented, but it's incredibly useful.

There's actually a company located here in California that has devised a similar feature for Baseball games, though it takes the idea of 'seeing what you would otherwise be unable to see' to its broadest level by including all kinds of information on the screen, like a baserunner's average running speed.

I've never needed anything indicating where the puck is when I watch hockey, whether it's zoomed in, or zoomed out. There is a 'standard' camera angle that shows about a third of the ice at any given time, and the puck is quite easy to see, anywhere on the ice, unless it's moving incredibly fast, or along the near-boards.

Then again, I've been watching hockey since I was a baby.

My biggest beef is usually that they don't zoom out ENOUGH from the action. I want to see what the whole team is doing at all times. I want to watch plays develop, not just the end result.
