For real though, torrents (and their inevitable development) are the future of music. For example, I downloaded a 13gig David Bowie discography torrent in 3 days last week. Pretty much everything the man has ever done and recorded. A collection like that would probably cost more than $1000USD, and it's all in lossless.
Affordability has even less to do with it than sheer availability of both common commercial releases as well as rarities and whatnot. If record companies were smart, they'd be on this. But they're not, and even worse, they are being stubborn to what could be an amazing evolutionary step in entertainment and delivery. And so they shall continue to be stolen from, and people who download Hot100 lists shall continue to be the ones getting caught.
