Despite the fact they're on the same channel, you can mix them all individually anyways so it hardly matters much.

Using drum racks now. I like it better than battery because its more integrated and you can add effects and send and returns within the one device.

I installed the Live 8 upgrade (from Live 5) and have to say that Drum Racks are a big improvement for me. They are much closer to what I expect from a drum sequencer than what I could get with Live 5.

Drag and drop samples into the "pads" then each one of those has it's own separate channel. It might be limited in LE though.
