There seems to be a lot of misinformation relating to protools on here.

I have to use it everyday in the studio at work, and by that I mean 4 fully expanded ProTools HD3 rigs, both for tracking sessions and mixing (for film). And that's just the smaller studio 1.......

Protools is the industry standard for several reasons (listed in importance).

1, Stability. Above every other consideration, stability is the number one priority in a pro studio. When you are on a deadline and the dub stage is waiting for your stems, and hour delay can cost $10k without blinking, let alone a day late. PTHD is, in relative terms, the most stable platform.

2, Connectivity/Track count - a fully expanded PTHD rig can give you 192 tracks (simultaneuos). Also, the DIGI96/192 interfaces have an abundance of connectivity options (adat/optical/tdif/spdif/aesebu/analogue/madi/etc.) to interface with whatever you need, including MADI which saves a huge amount of wiring/cable (52 or 64 tracks per one coax cables).

3, Processing power. PTHD rigs can be expanded and link to give more tracks at higher resolutions than any other platform and that doesn't even mention the DSP for TDM plugins which in most cases are far more powerful and processor consuming than than the vast majority of VST/AU's. Altiverb alone needs two DSP cards to use any the longer impulse responses (over 4secs tails for instance).

4, Audio editing - not logic, cubase or sonar offer the editing options. For instance: playlists (of takes) on tracks based on linear time reference, Waveform manipulation (draw part of the waveform), elastic time (pioneered by Protools over 3 years ago), audio time delay offset between discreet devices and machines, I could go on but you get the point....


I'm not a protools fanboy - some days I hate it with a passion and I find the interface clunky and ugly, but nothing has the range of vast options that PTHD does, especially available as a simple modular system that can lend itself to so many studio applications, be it analogue or digital, tracking or mixing, live sound or dubstage. etc.

Note that I didn't mention sound quality - at this level all the comparable interfaces sound great - if anything PTHD sounds clear but a bit dead to me, so sound quality is a bit of an irrelevant point.

personally, mboxes or the mpowered versions are a waste of space and time. The interfaces are overpriced for their quality and the version of protools is limited so the advanced function are not present. great way to learn the basics of protools, but not really a clever option when you can better sounding interfaces to use with better programs such as logic,cubase or sonar.

Nicely summed up DJ RANN, but I would just add that I personally read the OP's original question in a little different context - I was thinking of it more from a home studio-ist's standpoint. Not many of us can drop thousands of $$$ on a PT HD system and most of us probably wouldn't even if we had that kind of expendable income, so I guess I just assumed that he was referring more to the MBox/M-Powered PTLE systems. But, you raise many good points.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on PT's MIDI editing capabilities? Have they been improved in PT8?

Rann's got all its advantages listed well. Its only useful if recording large numbers of tracks basically. If you're recording an orchestra, PT would be my go to, but I'm never going to do that, and if I really needed an orchestra, I'd need a good room for them, so I'd go to a real studio. Pro tools has decent hardware/software integration if you get one of the big systems (ICON) but for smaller setups its not worth it.

Incidentally, I disagree with RANN and studiobob about PT's audio editing. Studiobob, in ableton, you can elasticise the audio in a few seconds and align those drum hits however you like.

There's so many problems with it
- No VST
- Inefficient Looping
- No included instruments and poor plugins
- Lags behind in every feature basically, like midi editing etc...
- Proprietry plug in formats and audio interfaces
- Shitty audio Interfaces (They're hugely overpriced)
- The audio editing just isn't really better
- Can't actually do anything that other DAWs can't, except provide raw audio streaming power for 100 tracks

If I had to work with PTHD, I'd slap a logic frontend on it.
