Song meanings are always up for debate, but I believe the song is about a man who wakes up from an alcohol binge to find himself in the throes of an LSD flashback.

That's exactly where I'd place it as well, just by the lyrics. Wasn't sure if maybe there was an actual story to it or something along those lines.

The song was written by Mickey Newbury, who was part of the outlaw country movement that paralleled the other counter-culture movements of late 1960's America. Wiki suggests this song is anti-LSD and some members of this "clique" were notoriously against the use of strong perception-altering drugs like acid, but I just don't see the 'ware the drug' message in this song. Wiki did learn me that Adam Corolla is a big fan, which I suppose is notable.

I can't find any info related to the song being based in truth or on any story. It doesn't seem particularly out of bounds though...
