Humans spam these forums with stupid questions, alot more often than these bots, and ontop of that, what the bots spam..is actualy useful!

Sadly, that seems to be the policy for dealing with them.

I think you could fairly easily disrupt the economics of these spammers by requiring 10 posts before allowing a new user to start a new thread, and automatically blocking any user with fewer than 10 posts who fires off more than 5 in a short time period (say 10 minutes).

It'd probably also stop a lot of retard n00b threads, forcing them to use the search function first.

You could even loosen the rule by only blocking posts with links. Most new users who aren't blatant spammers aren't going to tossing URLs into their first posts, and spammers can't really benefit unless they can get people to click a link.

I made this suggestion a while back and never really got a concrete answer as to why it wasn't practical. Oh well.

As I said, the point is not to prevent any kind of spam under any circumstances - that's impossible. The point is just to disrupt the economics. If it takes a spammer 2 hours to be able to start spamming then he's likely to go find an easier target (right now TA is a VERY easy target).

Moreover, spammers use scripts, and most scripts aren't sophisticated enough to handle that kind of state. Most scripts aren't even capable of going through existing threads, let alone posting in them, they just hit the registration form and then immediately start crapping new threads everywhere. Of course, the scripts could be made more sophisticated, but it'll only happen if (a) the spammers actually know what the triggers are, and (b) if they want to waste the time updating the code. If every site is doing it, they'll find a way around it; if a few sites are doing it, they don't care.

And once they find a way around it, you can block that. In the example above, the protection could be updated to auto-ban new users who post exactly or very close to 8 minutes apart (or really any specific timing at all). Again, not a normal human behaviour, and by restricting it to new users (the Achilles' Heel of spambots) you minimize the chance of any "collateral damage".

There's also a pretty good chance that if the spam bots started posting random shit in random threads, they'd get caught before having the chance to actually spam. Again, not a sure thing, but anything to disrupt the economics is likely to get them to give up and find another rube.
