I'll admit, I laughed a little @ Armin's headphone switcheroo.
There's only so much you can do with a 4/4 rhythm & a multinational crowd.
Not generalizing here, but you have to keep things pretty painfully simple for the trance kiddies (especially lyrically) - Just like I'm sure someone singing an Italian opera over a pumping 138BPM supersaw monster would sound great, I wouldn't be able to understand a goddamned thing. Why use il tramonto è la riflessione della profondità when one could drop in, say, spaghetti meata-ball rocky-balboa - it may make zero sense but the whole world would at the very least understand what's being said. Hence why nearly ALL trance lyrics (and pop lyrics, for that matter) are overgeneralized to the point where it's nearly ridiculous. Add in a really sad-sounding chord structure, mix in some pianos as a countermelody and BAM, you've got forum kiddies the world over crying on dancefloors.
Essentially, after a while everything's a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy.
