well i haven't used fm8 yet but select a saw first with a hi hat pattern on a loop then select square with the second osc or sound shaping device then triangle. select lp on a filter you may have and remove any effects to and use the envolope to any res and start by opening release and use sustain to about half way and post up what you have done

You don't have a point to make.

Whenever I try to make a crash cymbal with FM, I end up with some monstrosity like this:

What you should do is develop your own mold for the crash cymbal and your own alloy and make a few of them then make your own condenser microphone and of course your own patch cables to record a few crashes

Not the most realistic sounding crash I've ever heard, but it sounds kinda cool. I'd like to hear it reversed!

It does sound neat, just not much like a crash. It would be good if I were trying to make sounds for harsh techno or industrial or something.

Now this is more like it (for hi hats):

http://jbj.raceriv.com/sounds/perc/hihat10.mp3

Getting a bit better. I linked velocity to some of the operators so it changes the character of the sound.
