It's all about showing that your kindness is a choice and that you're not a slave to it. If you show that your kindness is backed up with strength, they will respect it... if you let them go to far to overrun you, they won't. Learning to recognize the line and show the appropriately tempered response (don't let them push you, but don't completely shut them down either) is just something you learn with experience.
