Reaper is on trial version and it does good for what it is. All the advice is helping. I mean I know very little about making the music, but I do love it and want to try mixing some things and making beats and such, so of course small is how Im going to start.

For all of you out there that do this, how'd you begin?

I started with FL, fuck that reaper shit. I tried it and it was gay. Plus, FL has a better piano roll than just about every other DAW out there so you need nothing but an imagination and a computer. Also, AFAIK FL demo is fully functional. Then just find some free vst's. There a lot out there. I mean A LOT.

for example: synth1, crystal, lazysnake (good for electric pianos).

I started with Reason. Bought Ableton Live in 2005 mainly because I was attracted to Native Instruments VSTs, which weirdly enough I hardly use these days except for FM7. Got some other VSTs that I enjoy more like impOSCar and the Korg Legacy Analog collection. Parents got me my first hardware synth, Moog Little Phatty, for graduation. That is where I am at right now. I also still enjoy using Reason and have been buying the updates for the last five years since I first got it.

u cant fuck that Reaper shit when you want to go free. its the only option you got unless you want your computer full of virus and shit.

advice: print out and read the manual for Reaper and register at their forum and start browse around there. If id start all over today id go the Reaper way.
