Because trance has like taken over for euro-dance.
People ask me what music i listen to, and im like "Trance" and their like "oh.." because they instantly associate the music with commercial dance music from the radio.
Or I ask someone what music they like, and they say "Trance" i ask them what artists they like and they start mentioning artists such as Cascada, Brooklyn Bounce, or some other mindless crap.
I think what is considered Trance is just so widely varied and different now, that nobody wants to be associated with it. |
I think a lot of people are just using trance as a blanket statement for the music they listen to, kind of like how people used to just say techno to refer to electronic music (some clueless people still do). Although I will admit that these days, when someone uses the word trance, it is a little more targeted than the old techno statements.
The problem is that most people whether they mean to or not, know that this has become a blanket statement and will just assume they mean the most mainstream form. This is either because they don't know any better and just associate it themselves, or they think the other person is too new to the scene to define their musical tastes any more specifically.
When someone asks me what I listen to, instead of trance, I try to list subgenres of trance that I enjoy. If they don't know what they are, I'll give them artist examples if they want. When I ask someone what they listen to and they tell me trance, I try to ask what artists they listen to so that I get a better idea of what they like. The problem is that some people who are brand new to the scene don't realize that trance is such a broad term that they are only very loosely defining what they listen to when they say trance. Maybe my approach to dealing with others will work for you too.
