Well, true that about being smelly and dirty. Public Transport is quite a mess/very underdeveloped. For every fantastic restaurant you get 5 crapp ones - the trial/error ratio is really annoying. Not too many great EDM clubs. I think it's just a general theme of this city: Things are either ridiculously good, tasty, fancy, entertaining or bad and overpriced.

One of the only (if not the only) cities in the world to have a 24 hour running subway system has underdeveloped public transportation? Sawweeeeeeeet.

I think this is actually a good topic of discussion. In my opinion, the answer is: it depends.

NYC is highly overrated if you're a tourist with no roots there, and not enough money to avoid a visit dealing with traffic, taxis, subways, and the typical tourist traps... and tiny ass hotel rooms.

NYC is highly underrated if you know your way around, how to avoid the tourist traps, are plugged in to the social scene as locals understand it. Other than London, where else in the world can you walk down the street and hear about 150 different languages? You can get anything you want at almost any hour. You'll find some of the best restaurants, art, fashion, music, etc. all within a short distance from you. Central park in the fall is fantastic.

Just my 2 cents

True, that's a major plus (plus the aircondition inside the cars). On the other hand, the transportation from East to West and vice versa is horribly slow - buses only. The subways come randomly, sometimes every 3 mins, sometimes you're waiting for 20 minutes (at 9 am mind you). On weekends you always have these changes due to construction work - if you miss one announcement you suddenly find yourself in fucking Queens.

I loved my vacation there.

-The transportation was easy and convenient
-Endless diversity of people/styles
-Great variety of foods around every corner
-People were really friendly when I had questions
-The random things going on were always entertaining
-And I'm sure there would've been heaps to do if my girlfriend hadn't kept me on a leash

Although, I could go without:

-The dirtiness
-The crazy fucking taxis
-The crime, I felt uncomfortable/paranoid at times (compared to Hawaii, I'm guessing a lot of places would feel like this)

If you think public transport in New York sucks, don't ever come to Australia, ever.

i think it's a great city and a lot cleaner than it was 10 years ago according to NYC friends who claim that juliani really cleaned house and made central park safe again.

when i was there, people were friendly and i especially love the way all the streets are lined up. nice and simple in numerical order. not like this shit here in florida "sunset blvd" and "university drive". too confusing unless you live here and know your way around.

i like numbered streets that go in order. so easy to find your way around.

overall, it was a beautiful city and i loved the architecture and energy. would live there for a while if i could afford it. i dont know about settling down there though. people talk about new yorkers being assholes, but i think they just keep it real and dont like to candy coat everything....my kinda people.

It's retardedly basic. You can't tell because that map has no scale, but to drive from Hurstbridge to Lilydale would be about 45 minutes.

There are massive sections of the city not covered by train, and the trams and buses are inadequate, slow and infrequent. If you're at the end of one train line it's nigh on impossible to get to the end of an adjacent line on public transport.
