why's that sad? they go hand-in-hand and inspire each other when dealing with EDM.
Its kinda like photography and photoshop. A photographer doesnt need to learn photoshop and a photoshop-ist doesnt need to learn photography. They don't need each other but they pretty much go hand-in-hand and inspire each other. |
It's sad because the inability for the normal every day producer to make money has driven everyone to be a dj. Vice versa applies as well. A dj that produces to try and get exposure to his dj'ing.
This naturally creates an environment where many producers shouldn't be dj'ing and many dj's shouldn't be producing; but because of the economic environment and the overkill of numbers in both areas, people continue to.
Ideally people would only do what they love and/or are truly talented at. It just irritates me that most of the producers I find exceptional suck at dj'ing and most of the dj's I find exceptional suck at producing (or outsource their material).

Understanding the fundamentals of audio are important. You don't need to go to a fancy audio engineering school and pay off student loans for the next five years. Take one or two classes, either in sound design, music production, and engineering -- they are all essential in this field of music and really are all intertwined. A class that combines the three is the best option.
Apply the knowledge you learn, offer to work at a recording studio (for free if need be), work at a Pro Audio store. But really it comes down to studio time and dedication. I have friends who went to producing schools and are not doing much with what they learned and friends who sat in their studios and self-taught themselves, are super active production-wise and have records out on Juno and Beatport (although the latter can be a longer path). So, often it comes down to the individual and motivating factors.
Education can never hurt, only help. And for some people (myself included), it gives you deadlines which forces you to apply what you are learning, helps you improve faster with objective critiques and reviews from the class. The same thing can be accomplished on message boards as well.
