i've found the less tv you watch, the more interesting and intelligent you get.

not getting the dtv converter box i wanted before my gov coupon expired turned out to be the best thing to happen to me. right now my tv gets 30 channels and only 4 of them are worth watching sometimes. 2 of them are public channels (2 pbs channels ftw), one is nbc (late night), the other has seinfeld reruns and the rest are junk. thanks to tivo i don't need to watch more than a couple hours (commercial-free) per week. i do miss fsn, espn, toon, hist and some others though, but it's surprisingly easy to go on without them.

not having all the channels i had before dtv i spend a lot more of my time outdoors, exercising, hanging out with friends and meeting new people rather than escaping into fantasy land and having my thoughts shaped for me while the real world passes me by.

cable news to me is especially pointless. you are fooled into thinking you're learning about politics and current events, but really you're getting gamed into being more angry, more fearful, more confident in your fragmented knowledge and more rigid in your views--ultimately becoming a pawn of the mass media--only capable of expressing your jaded views through soundbites and punditry. it does not enrich your life in any way. if you want objective information about the world you live in, you should be reading it out of a magazine like time, economist or foreign policy. these publications actually adhere to journalistic standards by providing contextualized information and separated editorial with compelling reasoning. not to mention reading words forces you to process information in your head in a way that staring at a person talking to you in a screen can't.

most talk radio is garbage. it's worse than garbage. it's divisive fearmongering rhetoric. the one island of sanity in the talk radio universe is npr. it's quite striking how intelligent the programming on public radio is in contrast to the trash that populates the media conglomerate stations. then again dividing your media empire into segments that capture mass audiences and tells them exactly what they want to hear is a highly profitable model.

Actually it does.

I am not a LD fan, but Lou Dobbs does not hate the Hispanic "race" (proven by the fact that his wife is Hispanic). He hates illegal immigration. Listen to his words very carefully. This is an important distinction that most people miss.

He also has xenophobic tendencies, but based on cultural differences rather than racial differences.

I 100% agree with this statement.

NPR has been mocked for being too boring and left-leaning, but it is the single greatest source of 'fair and balanced' news and analysis on the radio.

being a racist is not the same as hating a race. you can have friends and family of a different race and still have prejudice views against people like them. i'm not insisting this is the case with lou dobbs because i don't know anything about him, but the simple fact that he's married to a hispanic woman doesn't preclude him from being racist against hispanics.

Perhaps we have different definitions of 'racism.' I think of a racist as someone who hates someone primarily for their genetic background (skin color, hair type, etc.), not necessarily for the cultural background, although often these two things are linked.

From listening to Dobbs, I get the impression that he doesn't hate people because of their genetic background. Rather, he feels that the American government should be supporting policies that promotes American 'cultural values.'

For example, he supports an English-Only policy in schools and government agencies. This doesn't mean that he hates other people because of their race.

He also has stated that he "resents" Columbus Day and St. Patrick's Day:
"[P]eople [are] celebrating a distant history and their lineage ... that has nothing to do with celebrating America, and I find that astonishing. Frankly, I resent those kinds of holidays." Dobbs continued: "[T]his is a country that is so focused on the differences among our 300 million citizens, we don't celebrate enough our commonality, our similarities, our bond. And I become very sensitive to this."

I don't think he's racist at all. His views on immigration policy are just unrealistic. The bigger problem is that he's managed to get swallowed up by the FoxNews age, where other news networks were forced to experiment with opinion based, commentary driven shows in order to compete with Fox, who were and still are kicking everyone's ass in the ratings. MSNBC has completely gone the way of Fox, and even CNN with Dobbs and its comical experiment with Glenn Beck, have had to switch things up in order to stay afloat. I've been watching Dobbs for nearly three decades on CNN, and have always had a high opinion of him.

I think his views about immigration, national identity, and so forth area just based on a fleeting sense of nationalism that many in his generation grew up with, and as such, are having difficulty assimilating into the new multi-ethnic/multi-cultural America that has largely obscured the old "Leave it to Beaver" construct, where everyone got behind national causes out of a misguided sense of patriotism. In effect, times have changed, and the Lou Dobbs and Bill O'Reilly's of the world are finding a core audience of their same demographic who relate to what they're saying.
