I generally pitch my percussion a bit, just by ear though. I've heard you can look on a frequency analyser for the fundamental to try and get a fix on what note its playing, but I find working by ear easier and probably more reliable. Makes a bit of a difference but not always important for all sounds IMO.

Its actually quite surprising that so many people place just their drum samples on sequencer (without a sampler). I like editing adsr envelops and doing things like that to samples?

It does. Ultrabeat is a very flexible and powerful drum machine/synth and EXS24 is the sampler.

cubases built in fade in and fade outs are more complex than ADSR, you can make the attack and decay curves concave or convex instead of just linear which makes a huge difference. and i like seeing the waveforms on the grid instead of midi notes.

and any sampler cant do that?

No. I don't know of any sampler which allows control over the envelope curves. Look up "convex and concave envelope behavior"

I know but the interface just seems alien - in fairness I'venever given it more than 5 minutes as bettery did everything I needed, but I think I'll give it another shake. Thanks Eric!

Yeah, the interface can be a bit daunting at first, but once you get a hold of it, you start to realize how powerful and highly underrated the instrument really is. People talk about "big time" producers having "secret weapons" and this is exactly the type of synth that falls into that category, you just have to get comfortable with it.
