I ended up getting a pair of Behringer EUROLIVE B212D... hopefully they will be enough to rock a small sized house

Sweet. I think those are pretty similar to the 212As. Should be enough but if not then for not really that much more you could always up it to the 215s.

Yep, and I can always use them as monitors later on .

If I get bigger speakers, I am getting passives and a mixer, subs etc.

whatever you end up getting, get a sub as well as tops - it really helps to separate the bass from the mids & tops

powered speakers are much easier to set up & harder to destroy

Im planning on getting subs when I get a hardware mixer.

Do I need a "low pass filter" to get the most out of a sub?

nope. most decent subs have an adjustable filter.
