Hey maybe you can explain this to me: why are native resolutions for plasma TV's not in widescreen? They're all 1024x768, which is a 4:3 resolution, so if I want to plug my PC in then I'm stuck at a low-end res.

I'd definitely go with plasma if it wasn't for the low resolutions.

edit This is in reference to 720p plasma's, not 1080p ones. 720p LCD's, for example, have a native resolution of 1366x768 (16:9).

I thought the native resolution was 1280x720, hence the "720" in "720p." No?

regardless of how the panel is lit, LCD displays have a myriad of issues that make them less than desirable to anyone looking for picture quality. poor black levels, horrible off-angle performance, brutal motion handling are just 3 of many issues...

even a mid level plasma can easily outperform the most expensive LCDs on the market, both quantitatively (in testing) and qualitatively (subjective opinion based on use)

An LCD = liquid crystal display. There's a light behind liquid crystal panels, and the liquid crystal either blocks or lets light through. etc.
LED Backlit LCD = the light behind the liquid crystal panels are leds.

An LED TV actually has tiny LEDs for each pixel. The advantage is no backlight, so for black there's literally no light at all. So blacks are true black, makes for a great contrast ratio, unlike lcd where black only looks black when it's against something bright.
The disadvantage is price, price and size (The screens are pretty small at the moment as this manufacturing process is still in its infancy).

Seems marketing like to call led backlit lcd's "LED TVs", sounds like they've opened up a whole lot of legal worms since they're lying.

Ah I get it. So the majority of the TVs labeled as "LED TVs" that are out today, are just LED backlit LCDs, right? In that case what then is all this hype about energy saving as a result of having a backlit LCD? Is the different between LED and CCFL backlighting that much different in terms of energy consumption?

The major power user in a LCD would be the backlight, right? Going to LED isn't a huge power saving, but considering the light is the main power consumer, it ends up making a difference...
