I consider myself an environmentalist, and I probably do more than the average westerner to reduce my carbon footprint, but that's just stupid. Individual acts are meaningless, even if you think a symoblic gesture by dignitaries is somehow required. Action needs to happen at the societal level to make any impact. No symbolic gesture is going to change engrained habits. There are only two ways to make significant changes to our behavoirs: (i) offer something better that is profitable, or (ii) force behavoiral change through regulation. A mix of the two is probably the most realistic route. This is just as stupid as expecting millionaire Detroit exectuvies to carpool to Capital hill in a hybrid.
