Also, there's a second hand MOTU 828 mk2 that I'm considering buying. Does anyone know how the tech support is nowadays with MOTU?

Tech support is fine with motu - they have a good track record and I never had any problems working with them when I used to be a service tech.

The mk2 is fine, and a decent interface with a lot of I/O - you can pick them up really cheap nowadays.

Are you mac or windows though?

I'd like to hear your thoughts after you spend some time with the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressors... been drooling over those for a while.

Whenever Radial starts shipping the Workhorse 5000, I'll be picking one of those up along with a pair of Mono Optographs and a Dual Vandergraph. Shadow Hills makes some great stuff.

Have you ever actually dealt with their tech support as a customer? They're widely known to be one of the worst manufacturers out there when it comes to that.

Why three? Is that for a multi-band mastering setup or something?

I've owned a few of their products, but luckily only had to deal with them once.

I was trying to buy a PCI-424 card for my 24i (this was about 2 months after I bought the 24i, and just after they had released the new interfaces with the PCIe 424), so that I could use it with my new G5 system, and was pretty much told "too bad, buy a new interface if you want the new card".

I'm done buying MOTU products at this point anyway, mainly because they no longer make anything that suits my needs. Surprised to hear that you've had good experiences with them, though.

Surround - nearly all the projects are surround so you need one each for the LCR channels.

@hex - the workhorse looks really cool but they are taking their sweet time about it!

As for motu - not a huge amount as a customer, but I don't use tech support from any manufacturers apart from what other owners post on forums.

Everything is already out there in terms of info, unless it's something completely new but that will never happen to me as I'm not an early adopter (learnt that from being a service tech).

I doubt I'll ever phone some muppet in a call center to tell me less useful information than I already know or can find online.

The only thing you have to rely on is if they support new OS/sequencers in terms of drivers, and motu have been pretty good IMO with coming out with new drivers for their kit when there is a change (as I remember they were one of, if not the first to bring out drivers for vista for their older hardware).

I'll agree with you that they're on top of things as far as releasing updated drivers.

Luckily I've never had a problem with their hardware that I couldn't fix on my own, and I mostly avoid dealing with tech support for anything beyond warranty repairs. I just have a bad taste left in my mouth from basically being told to go fuck myself when I wanted to PAY them for a new PCI card for my 24i. I know some people who have had far worse experiences with them, but mostly on the "tech support rep reading common problems and solutions to an equally clueless customer" level.

Does the studio you work at have any other Shadow Hills stuff?

I haven't dealt with them personally, but I do have a MOTU 828mkII and it's great. MOTU has a history of pretty bad support for some products (particularly their software instruments, such as BPM, Ethno, etc.), but overall they produce quality hardware gear and their drivers are pretty good. That said, we're still waiting for a driver that officially supports Windows 7 - many of us 828mkII owners are getting occasional clicks/pops/static (not too bad, though) using the latest driver, which does not officially support W7.

I did indeed! But they made the deal really complicated. It involves signing papers, posting thing back and fourth etc., so that means that Symphonic Choirs is yet to arrive. I'm dying to play around with wordbuilder, but people say it's unstable with FL...I've been thinking that my transition to Cubase is long overdue lately.

It seems there are a lot of mixed opinions on MOTU's support. Either way I think a 828mkII would be a good choice for me.
