What I really like about this video is that it shows the very unlikely source materials Liam Howlett used to make the original track, and how seamlessly he fucks them up and fits them together. None of the stuff he samples sounds anything like the finished product, and the RATM sample in particular is one I'd never think of.

Oh yeah I agree, I'm just thinking that the amount of work Liam put into his version was probably much more than an hour in the studio with a laptop

Having read only a couple of comments on YouTube, the big question for me is whether Jim Pavloff knew upfront which samples Liam had used, or that he figured everything out all by himself? In case of the latter, it's even more awesome.

Hmm, I thought the album liner notes listed the samples but apparently not...

Well, he could always have found other ways to figuring out which samples were used. Maybe through Liam himself, who knows. I'd say he knew it upfront.

Yeah, one would have to know the source - some of the samples are so manipulated (like that RATM one) that it'd be pretty impossible to figure it out just by listening to the track.

The Ultramagnetic MCs sample is well known, but the others aren't credited in the inlay.

which is not uncommon since that is the most recognizable one. and as you know, most producers don't try to clear samples if they have been that mangled since there is that one chance that noone will ever know unless you point it out. or they just clear it afterwards.

but i read somewhere that liam got kool keith to re-record the vocals for smack my bitch up.

So where do the 'vocals' from the breakdown in the final mix come from?

here's a simpler one. i couldn't find the video that shows the vocoded percussive loop for "remind me" unfortunately. that one was also a simple-yet-effective effecdt.
