my mom is hardcore religious. my dad pretends to be but it's pretty obvious that he goes to church just to agree with mom. he's also an "elder" or whatever at the church now, and works the sound system, so i think he feels a sense of comradery/importance in the church (which therefore encourages him to further his "beliefs")

My girl's family converted to Christianity as soon as they arrived in Brazil, though no one was really religious except for her and her sister. Still, everyone in the family was baptised. However, I recently learnt Christianity is quite widespread in South Korea...

my mom is hardcore religious and I'm thankful for that. she reminds me of proverbs 31 from the bible:

It is a fairly well-established sociological finding that women tend to be more religious than men, at least in the Westernized countries where this has been studied most extensively. Even when they do depart from statistically "normal" religious beliefs, it seems like they almost always describe themselves as agnostic rather than atheist. The "mild" option.

I suspect, though I have no data on this, that women are less likely in general to hold beliefs that fall far outside the norm, not just in the case of religion. Confiscate-all-private-property socialism, fascist-like conservatism, anarchistic libertarianism, transhumanism, conspiracy theory ideas: just pick one at random out of the big batch of ideas and positions that most people consider "wacky" or unusual, and I bet you more men will hold it. But that is just going off of personal experience, so I might be wrong.

Well, women do tend to be more conservative when it comes to language, and I remember reading about that in many different contexts... even when Plato tried to take a jab at sociolinguistics, unbeknownst to him, women were more conservative.

All in all, what you said makes a lot of sense... I wish I could have some data on this though.

I voted for my Mother, because she is slightly more religious than my Father. But as for why, well, I'm far too drunk to try and explain that. Maybe I'll try when I'm sober, in a couple of days or so.

I'm usually wary of pop science books, however, because they usually get an awful lot of stuff wrong about language, such as the whole "women speak more than men", which is still very much debatable.

I have looked at actual GSS tables, so I know that the generalization about religiosity holds for American women and men, at least. Other than that, I have not studied the topic in a lot of depth and am admittedly going on informal impressions.

Hey, I think I do have access to the statistics provided by the Brazilian government. I'm not sure it is of any use, given how Brazilians in general are very religious, but I'ma take a look at it

They're both equally atheist, but my mother does believe in a lot of new age crap and puts faith in astrology and premonitions. So while she's definitely more "spiritual" she's also more inclined to subscribe to off-centre beliefs, to contradict JBJ.
