rather than donating money, I'd rather just donate time. A friend of mine has done a year in ghana & she loved it, just helping out with whatever, teaching them skills etc.

Giving money will likely accomplish more than "giving time," unless you have so little money to give that the work made possible by your donation would be less than the work you yourself would do by volunteering.
