Stupid... silly, but very funny and it's for a good cause so it's all in good fun!
Hey, it's a hit, we're talking about in a thread, people are noticing others out there who are aware of it, people are spreading it....
You're DEFINITELY gonna hear about on any TV show, radio station all morning tomorrow on your way to work. You're gonna read about it all day as well...
And if it makes even 1 person out of 10 people to think "hey, that is a good cause, I totally forgot about it, maybe I'll throw them a few dollars when I get home from work"... then it's a success!

I really need someone to explain how doing a marathon helps charities (yea people take sponsorship and put that towards donations but might as well just collect money during various events and then toss it in...what's the need to run?) |
Because it does get money from donations/sponsorship... but it promotes...
SCENARIO 1 - Your unathletic buddy at work says, "hey, i'm running this weekend for whatever charity, you want to sponsor me?", since you have a connection to this guy, and not some anonymous kid out there with MD or some lady with breast cancer... you feel the obligation to donate money because he is doing something for a good cause... OR (which is usually my way), you're so shocked and doubtful that this guy can even run down the block, let alone 15km.. you say, sure... if you can do that, put me down for $20...
SCENARIO 2 - I highly doubt that AChannel news or the local newspaper is going to do a spot on you if you dontate money the traditional way, via cheque, cash or online. "And when we return from break, we're going to talk to a local man who donated $40 to a charity via paypal... more after these commericals"
Also, things like that bring out people to cheer and watch and support creating more promotion for the cause. Have you never woken up (albeit annoying) and noticed a bunch of people creating noise and hooplah outside running or marching? You probably tried to figure out what it was...
And lastly, marathons usually engage gatherings, which give people who think they are unique or alone in their situatio or ailment to come together with others who may suffer from the same thing and realize that they are not alone and could help them in their situation...
Not to mention... it's pretty fun. And you feel good about it too! I used to be one of those guys who just tossed a few bucks here and there. But getting involved, even if you can't afford to give something moneteray, but give your time or efforts. It all helps! Last Summer I cohersed into signing up to be a route marshall for the Run For A Cure for Breast Cancer... you had to cheer the runners along. It was Sunday, it was cold, it was rainy... but me and my friends got dressed up and made the most of it, and the fun tha others had seeing us be retards and goofs and the thanks you get from people... it's nice.
Had ALOT of fun!

wait wait wait..you donate to get your face on TV?
the amount of money spent on ad campaigns, promo material, banners, rentals and a million other things....am I the only one that sees that as money that could've been put towards the donation instead of pointlessly running?
i mean how does one person running help a charity? (once again, my point being that all the money is made from the sponsorship and not the act of running) |
No, but being on TV gets into thousands of homes and let's people know about the cause and what is being done and stuff...it's an event. Just like a parade or anything.
But I do see your point about how does the "running" make the money... it's the activity of doing it. It's that you're actually doing something instead of just signing a cheque or reaching into ur pocket...any activity could do. There has been readathons, danceathons etc... and it brings people together.
And like i mentioned before, it's the whole novely about it... kind of like your boss saying, if the entire office donates more than $500 he'll work one week in a dress... it's fun, it's a goal. People want to see him a dress so they may donate more...
I'm not just gonna ask you for money, i'm not only going to take the money and give it to those who need it, but I'M going to do something too (maybe to make it worth your while)
Like that movember thing... if I just walked up and asked you "hey, can I have $20 for prostate cancer?" you may or may not give it to me... but if I said "hey, can I have $20 for prostate cancer and in return you get to see me make a jackass of myself for the next 30 days looking like a goof and walking around with a ridiculous moustache to work, out, dates, weddings" you may be more inclined to do so...
In the end it's all about visibility, promotion, marketing, getting out there and being aware... the more that know, the more that could potentially donate.

i dont see how posting the colour of my current bra would help anyone with cancer |
The point of any viral marketing scheme... create a buzz, people talk, it gets bigger, they tell people about this weird thing on facebook, people know, people hear about it on the radio in the morning on their way into work or dropping kids off to school. Each talk show opens up with it or at some point in the monolouge, the news cover it, those trendy shit entertainments shows will make sure to let you know what colour Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton put as theirs... and so on and so on...
It created awareness of the breast cancer society, cost sweet fuck all to do... and now if maybe 1 out of a 100 people decide to donate even $10 to the cause... multiply that by a million, that is that much more money the breast cancer society has now then they did yesterday...
And for what? A simple, clever, viral marketing plan which exploited the popularity of social networking which targets millions world wide and a huge age demographic with some disposable income who may (or may not) decide to donate to a cause they either forgot about, undeducated about or simply unaware of...
INVESTMENT = $0
DONATIONS = possibilities could be endless
It boggles my mind how many people in this thread either promote or consider themselves to be promoters and can't grasp the concept of this clever strategy and plan...
