Well, one out of four Australians was born in another country. Learn a new language and I'm sure you'll be able to practise with someone there

Yes. There's the "Pimsleur" series if you want to learn how to speak a language first (it's mainly an audio course), Rosetta Stone if you want to learn the basic words, and you can find loads of different grammars on the internet to help you out.

I learnt basic Russian in high school using a dictionary and an on-line reference grammar, for example. People could understand me quite well, and I managed to have daily conversations with the few native speakers I knew. It's worth a try
