I doubt buffalo makes the drive. They are a networking company, so they probably make the network/interface card that connects the drive. The hard drive is made by one of the few makers (western digital, maxtor, etc.) Buffalo is actually a good name.

Any idea of what may be going on? Here's an error message utorrent gave me, and the explanation on the FAQ:

Looks like time for a new drive to me lira. Also, scandisk really isn’t all that useful. The only sure fire way to get things minty-new is a format.

So be it (a format). It is just 4-months-old, though, and I'm probably doing an international trip next month, so I can't really afford a new one right now

Is it a new drive? Because these types of problems will surface if its defective with in the first week after the purchase.

Are you getting errors when writing files to it from windows or only when using torrent? You can scan the drive for error using windows and reformat it. If that still doesn't work you need to contact the manufacture. They usually have a utility that does a low level scan that determines if it is defective.

How is the drive connected?

Yeah, it's rather new. And, no, only have these problems using torrent... though it's a bit rebellious now, and I'm having some trouble transferring the files from it to my laptop.

Is the drive power by the usb port or does it get power from an outlet? Its not uncommon that laptops don't supply enough power to self powered usb drives, resulting in errors when copying files.
