The 1999 era of trance may not sound particularly like classic trance, but it's unquestionably a different period of trance history to the present: different key names, different key labels, different clubbing context, different production methods and different sounds. It's an earlier period by every definition and interpretation.
But let's be clear: you're used to newbies referring to 1999 epic trance as "trance classics" or "old school trance" so you have your cut and paste patronising response you deliver without any thought or any consideration of actually helping people.
It's a pretty simple concept. He will already own the obvious compilations from the big names, so he wants something in their ilk that aren't as well known. And despite what you seem to think, more trance compilations were released in that period than what Tiesto and Oakey put their names to. |
I must have interpreted his original post as "earlier" as in the earliest years. Not as something from it's mid-life range. That's why I came off confused. I agree that the vibe of 1999 is different to the earliest years and also different to the vibe of today. That applies not only to melodic or progressive trance but also to psy trance.
I am kind used to average trance.nu type of posts about trance hence my answer. This was recently posted over at the trance.nu board in a thread about "which is your favourite year of trance?"
