Better speakers don't make a better mastering engineer. Maybe he knows his monitors better than those with the better monitors.

He'd be best off keeping the ones he currently has until he can acclimate to better ones. For the same reason you see several studios with something like Yamaha NS-10s and something much more modern right next to them.

But bro, ns-10s are like fully pro. You get me? My friend masters his tracks using reason, and he uses NS-10s. You get me?

Anyway, I'm going to set myself up with my teac hifi speakers and some cracked waves plugins and offer mastering for only $10 per track. Who's interested?

I'll use my awesome digidesign interface (mbox) and pro tools for the maximum of professionalism.

maybe he does know his speakers damn well but I for one won't pay money to someone who is entirely in the box, using speakers that are worse than my own bedroom setup.

There's a physical limitation of those speakers (: they sound like shit), combined with the incorrect placement as shown, which makes me think that setup will not let him hear the flaws in music or give a true monitoring environment to use that skill.

Better speakers don't make a better mastering engineer but shit speakers aren't going to help a good mastering engineer do their job.

I used to think similarly, but having used various different monitors I now realise that no matter how well you know your monitors, poor quality monitoring will obscure important details about your music. Its not a matter of some information being maximised and some minimised by a pair of speakers, its a matter of some information simply being obscured completely.
