But at the end of the day, the winner will be playing at a festival, representing Tranceaddict. Would you be 100% comfortable sticking someone behind the decks, who has zero live experience? There is a lot to DJ'ing besides being able to mix records, as I'm sure you can appreciate.

I don't think a time restriction is necessary in that case - just mention in the "official" competition thread (or whatever it is) that playing big tunes from start to finish probably won't get you picked.

I mean if I were to enter I'd most likely play older stuff, just lesser known.

You forget not everyone lives in/near a city that has legitimate clubs playing edm. I know I have turned down shows in my area because of the lack of a legitimate scene for edm. However I consider myself in the upper echelon of dj who post sets here and I have played at many parties and on big systems. A dj and his abilities have nothing to do with location. If a bedroom producer is good enough to win a comp on here they have every right. If they blow up they have that on their record for good. Not to mention most of the big name dj's are less than average. I don't think there are more than a few people in this world who are good enough to win a dj contest who would do so and then flop at the actual event. They'd have to be very lucky to land that opportunity.

I like the 1 ta production. I don't like the restriction on what years tracks have to come from. I think it should be limited to an hour as you are going to get a lot of people interested.

The problem with these sorts of things is one could re-do a set a million times and get it perfect (for submission) but would have difficulty doing the same thing uninterrupted live.

Criteria for judging would be the usual... track selection/programming, mixing, originality, etc. In the years I was a partner with WEMF, a 3-day electronic music festival - I handled the 'New Talent' DJ stage and I got a shitload of CDs mailed to me with mixes from all over (DnB, House, Trance, Techno, Breaks, etc.) and I had to pick the best ones and structure their time slots according to what style worked with what.

Now, whether I put the vote up to TAs, at the beginning (when all submissions are coming in) or at the end (after I've gone through them and picked out what I consider to be the best) is still undecided. Above all else, if I did go in that direction, I wouldn't want it to turn into a popularity contest for votes but rather to have the music speak for itself.
