If he dont, its pretty much a gimme that Producers who turn into DJs suck phallic at selecting. That said, hoping this is good, I could use a good mix comp right about now, cant wait to hear this.

Wait, now all of sudden criticizing is ok?

tracklist looks meh. when i think "renaissance series", i assume that the artist won't use it as a shameless plug for their productions, but whatever.

Same. At the risk of getting toothlessly reverential, I don't like the fact they've started using the Mix Collection moniker again. There's a lot of history associated with the name, and these new compilations that are packed full of self productions just don't live up to it.

everything is ok...if you feel its ok.
do whatever you want. dont let my ideals or philosophy supress what you feel is right.

There is no noun in your question. But to answer your vague question,
a mix format is easier to have a critical opinion on, than a album or EP. In a mix there is less artistic context to deconstruct, and less fully controlled artistic expression to digest...in comparison to an album. The work is shared between the DJ and the Producers/Artists. Agreed? Which makes a mix more of technical excercise than something like an album which more of an artistic excercise. A proper review of an album requires the ability of the listener to abstract the context. With a mix you really dont have to, you either enjoy the journey or you dont. And there is usually little left by the DJ, to deconstruct by the listener, again in comparison to an Album or EP. This makes being critical of a mix reasonably easier.

Criticism is fine if it balances a discussion, and a balanced discussion is always useful, because it leads to better understanding. Constructive criticism is also good if it points out a reoccuring problem or pattern in a system.

i'd also just like to add, the reason for all the original productions on comps these days is to distinguish them from the glut of live recordings that are avail; almost anyone can jump online and immediately find a club set of their favourite dj.

original productions, mash-ups and edits, if exclusively produced for the compilation are a great way of increasing the value of the content for you, the listener, whilst demonstrating a clear cut difference with the artists club sets / appearances. it is not, and was never meant to be, a cynical marketing exercise.

That's understandable, but why resurrect the Mix Collection name for these new releases, when they're so different to the original Mix Collections?

Boratto has a unique sound all his own and this is most evident in his original productions. I've heard disc 1 and while it wasn't earth-shattering, there were few moments I found myself bored or lacking enjoyment.
