I've often thought about the success of this site. I registered this name in 2004 but was active under a different name for a long time before 2004 as well. There's something about this forum that actually makes people want to come here again and again despite all the bullshit and bickering that goes on here . What is it?
I've pondered this for years, and the best answer I can come up with is, the forum loads very fast. Almost every other message board I've ever been to (regardless of subject matter) is slower and more annoying than this one. When something isn't lightning fast, users tend to lose interest. TA's webmaster limited the number of pics and smilies to a very small number and, from day one, fiercely resisted adding more despite users' requests to make it more graphical, out of performance considerations. And he's also been obsessively tweaking the forum to make it just a tiny bit faster.
The users who wanted more graphics and more fancy stuff were disappointed but, 10 years later, with over 10 million posts and one of the top forums on the Web, the webmaster has been vindicated.
