A car going at 30km/hr instead of 40km/hr will still kill a pedestrian that has their hoodie up, ipods blasting and steps out into the middle of the street without bothering to look both ways first.
Instead of getting knee-jerk reactionary and dropping speed limits, why not consider
- Stricter enforcing of jwalking laws, especially in heavy traffic areas?
- Doing analysis of high-impact areas to determine if longer times are needed at the intersections,
- See if more pedestrian crossing is needed in an area where it may be a long walk to the next intersection.
Or, I don't know - MP3 players and hoodies illegal.
I've been hit (thankfully nothing broke, just a severely bruised foot) by a car before because I was a space-case and walked across to a TTC island with my hoodie up and my iPod on. My friends asked why I didn't go after the driver, and I was just thinking "Uhh, it was my own fault?"
