This is also a one sided view, you are assuming the drivers are at fault. What about the people how were struck while on the phone or were not crossing at the intersection.

People need to be more attentive when driving and walking. lowering the speed limit will not stop that problem

A car going at 30km/hr instead of 40km/hr will still kill a pedestrian that has their hoodie up, ipods blasting and steps out into the middle of the street without bothering to look both ways first.

Instead of getting knee-jerk reactionary and dropping speed limits, why not consider

- Stricter enforcing of jwalking laws, especially in heavy traffic areas?
- Doing analysis of high-impact areas to determine if longer times are needed at the intersections,
- See if more pedestrian crossing is needed in an area where it may be a long walk to the next intersection.

Or, I don't know - MP3 players and hoodies illegal.

I've been hit (thankfully nothing broke, just a severely bruised foot) by a car before because I was a space-case and walked across to a TTC island with my hoodie up and my iPod on. My friends asked why I didn't go after the driver, and I was just thinking "Uhh, it was my own fault?"

Do you guys think this may have something to do with the cell phone ban? The couple of times that I've had to answer my phone because my bluetooth was dead, I noticed that it takes a hell of a lot more attention and effort to hide the cell phone than to just talk into it. Now you have to look around for cops and make sure you don't get caught. Such a stupid ban.

you can pull over to the side and answer the call. please do NOT keep your hand busy with holding your phone to your ear. if your bluetooth consistently fails, maybe be as thoughtful of charging your headset as you are with your phone. another option is keeping a wired headset handy in your car (yes. all phones still do have a physical output to do so)

Or, let voice mail take the call and get around to it later?

God forbid the cat at home is calling to remind the recipient to bring food.

But then I will no longer be able to validate my existence 24/7, just like 7-Eleven, and Walmart in the U.S.!

aren't there studies out that show people pay more attention because of high speeds than low ones anyway?

I'm usually doing close to that already anyway!

speed limits should be set as speeds you can't achieve or you'll lose the road. Anything less than that is just a waste of time and gas. People like fast cars and big engines, I say, use them!

i find it interesting that these deaths have spiked right after the ban.

Also the latest death was last night on davenport at symington. Anyone who knows davenport will know that this once major route has been biked laned to death and already has artifically low speed limits. (used to be 50, now 40) yet there was still an accident.

Im pretty sure symington has similar conditions if i remember correctly.

Lets lower the speed limits to 20 and 30 everywhere. Then we can find the next red herring to blame for the ped deaths that will continue to happen and perhaps even increase.
