I've seen something done similar before where someone got a flat map of the world to repeatedly scroll across the screen, only he put a big white circular border around it so it ended up looking like a spinning globe. I was sort of thinking about how I might be able to apply that to this scenario but would never had known how to go about actioning it so didn't even give it a second thought. Obviously I was wrong.
