There are very few games I can think of with the amount of depth into characters and story as Arkahm Asylum. I actually went in thinking 'I'm not really interested in Batman, but I'll give it a go' Only for me to finish the game and for it to completley change my opinion, leaving me intrigued about all the characters I never knew anything before.

People say nothing new, but the market is flooded by lack of originality, COD Modern Warfare 2, Resident Evil 5 etc. I was just pleasantly surprised by this.

I've been recommended to get Condemned and Prey, so I've just ordered them. See what there like!

But I have to say I have been playing games for a similar length of time, and found both these titles extremely refreshing to play! I would be interested to hear what some of your favourite games are?

To be honest, most of my favourite games were from the 16-bit era. There's not much that's released these days that really holds my attention for much more than an hour. Even the jump to 3D had me saying "Wow, this is the same game I played on the SNES, except in 3D, and a lot less fun (Ocarina of Time compared to LttP). The problem I have with saying that games like Mirror's Edge and Arkum Asylum are "unmissable" is that it implies that they've done something new and refreshing, which they haven't. They're just 'good' games. Although good, Arkum is just another clunky 3D adventure with ideas borrowed from Prince of Persia, Zelda and Metal Gear. Although good, Mirror's Edge is just another FPS game, but with running around jumping off of, and climbing things, I did that shit in SNES's 'Aladdin' (although, not in first person), and had a lot more fun too.

As for what my own favourites are? Sure

COD4 is one of my favourite FPS games of all-time, although I'm currently playing MW2 because that's what all my friends are playing as well. I love arcade shooters, and COD4 is a fantastic blend of all of the things I love in a FPS game. High speed, low health (though no one-hit-kill), fantastic level design, customizable equipment set-up, trick-shots, and SMOOOOOOTH gameplay (as opposed to the clunky GP of a game like Rainbow Six).

After that, Geometry Wars Evolved, Braid, and I had a lot of fun beating Super Mario Galaxy (the gravitational effects were fun to play around with)... then we leave the current gen and start going back in time...

Smash Bros Melee (and original Smash Bros, original for the original concept, Melee for being a GREAT sequel that added depth to the game)
Super Mario 64
GTA3
Katamari Damaci (sp?)

And after those 4 games, it's a jump right into 16 bit (and a little of 32 I think too) and earlier...

Landstalker
Chrono Trigger
Turtles in Time
Earthworm Jim 1 and 2
Super Mario Kart
Earthbound
FF4 and FF6
Bomberman
Paperboy
Punch-Out
Starcraft
Sim City 2000
Action Quake 2
Command and Conquer
Lords of Magic
Heroes of Might and Magic 2-4
Super Mario Bros 3
Megaman Series up to Megaman X3
Super Metroid
Contact
Ultima Online
Cannon Fodder

And my favourite game of all-time, Zelda: A Link to the Past

That's really all I can think of off the top of my head...

What most of these games have in common with each other, that's not shared by Arkum Asylum and Mirror's Edge, is that they either are the original game that got a bad-ass concept right (Super Smash Bros), or borrowed already existing ideas, and made them better (Zelda: Link to the Past), or took already existing ideas, and then blended them perfectly to make a fun game (Super Metroid using a Zelda-Style approach to a 2D, side-scrolling, Contra-shooter. Sure, the whole free-running thing in Mirror's Edge hadn't been done in an FPS before, but it's been done in other 3D games, and done better, with much more enjoyable levels and environments (holy white-wash btw). Sure, Batman is awesome, but I've been playing 'Arkum Asylum' since I first popped Zelda: Ocarina of Time into my N64 or Metal Gear Solid into my Playstation... it's all been done, and done better, YEARS ago.

spam, I looked at your profile and noticed you're the same age as me. I too find the 16 bit era of games to be one of the best, but I wonder if it's to do with the fact those are the games that we grew up with?

I do agree that games nowadays are focusing more on the graphics rather than the content (when back then graphics was not a big deal at all), but I do also think that I tend to be more biased simply because those games = my youth.

Sure, but I also think that it's easier to create a game with tight controls on a 16 bit game, or any game where graphics come SECOND to the gameplay.

There were bad games where it was tough to control your character the way you wanted back in the 8-bit era, and before that... but that was life back then save for a few amazing games (Super Mario Bros, Contra, Megaman, stand out as the flagship series of the Nintendo Era). Then 16-bit came along and suddenly, games with shitty controls were a thing of the past, or a rarity that were quickly banished to the 2-dollar bins at Bi-Way.

Then N64 came long (although PS had been out, they hadn't mastered the 3D aspect of their games just yet), and gave us Mario 64, a game with TIGHT controls, but a few camera issues. But after that... 3D just got clunky, they've been so busy upgrading the graphics that they can't, or don't, make games with the tight controls that Mario 64 had promised. They fixed the camera issue, but games have become slow and boring. And often, the games that DO have passable controls suffer in other key areas, such as level design, or are 60-hour adventures with shitty stories or redundant, repetitive game play.

First thing's first, give me a game I can play... THEN make it look pretty.

Deus Ex (2nd is pretty cool too)
Planescape Torment
Baldurs Gate 1 and 2
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 7
Zelda (man, they are all good. Play them. All of them)
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 (debatable though)
Starcraft
Warcraft 2 and 3
Dragon Age
Civilization 3 and 4 (hell, even 2 was brilliant)
Call Of Duty (They get worse as time goes on but still very good)
Operation Flashpoint
Elder Scrolls - Morrowind and Oblivion
Mario (Has there ever been a bad Mario? Seriously?)
Command & Conquer (Originals and Red Alert)
Freespace 2 (mother fucking cracker of a game. Get the FS2 Open remake for free!)
Icewind Dale

...plenty more but these are the cream of the crop.

Didn't see Okami or Killer7 or Portal in any posts. (Hey, if some posts include C&C games, mario, zelda, starcraft and warcraft...)

Yeah, Portal was a fantastic game. Orange box has to be up there with the must bys.

Just completed Mirrors Edge and I thouroughly enjoyed it all the way through. It was a shame the frustrating combat was really poor which did let the game down. Hopefully they can sort this out for the sequel.

From what I have played, Prey and Condemned are both pretty poor and I haven't been able to get into either of them.

Distinct lack of diablo 2, and rome total war was definitely better than civ 3 (or maybe original medieval).
