A "Live PA" of ableton loops is pretty similar to a DJ set, probably easier to accomplish actually. Playing a drumpad or something along with tunes (something I've seen a lot) is basically just a gimmick

I've also seen "Live PAs" that included a lot of gear but were basically just pre-recorded sets.

"Playing live" means that to some extent the music is being mechanically produced - actually playing riffs, manually controlling effects, etc. Of course it's arguable that a DJ is doing some mechanical actions, for example pressing play on a deck, moving a pitch slider, so I guess there is a grey zone

@ OP: out of curiosity, what exactly were you referring to by "playing live"?

Theoretically, it should be possible to "play" a "live" show - supposing a producer/DJ has all their gear in line.

I read an article, in Remix I think, about how Paul Van Dyke has live elements in his shows flipping between two macs loaded with Ableton and using a keyboard to record elements into the second while the first one was doing the grunt work. I also know BT does his shows live - but I've heard from a number of sources that his shows lack appeal.

I've done live keyboard overlays while DJ's have played (albeit in a very small venue with less than half the chops I like to think I have, now). That was a hell of a lot of fun, BTW.

He definitely has definitely has some "live" tools at his disposable but he basically play a DJ set.

Even if you're tracking elements separately, you're still going to have to have a balance of it pre-recorded and/or sequenced - presuming a one-to-two-man-band scenario. I would think, even if you're a group of three to five people, you'd still want to have some automation.

Now, there are ensembles who do live synthesis. There was one here in Michigan, a while back - but it's not party music, by any stretch. The short blips of promo I heard on the radio led me to believe it was something on the order of minimalist classical.

The fact remains that there are a lot of controller surfaces out there and that a lot of sequencers, like Sonar and Live - probably Live more-so - have the capacity to allow for musician/producer/DJ's to have control over a lot of different aspects of performances.

Thats one dude with sequenced drums and one dude can do only so much. And what if there were 4 guys in the band, one a singer, one for bass and pads, one for leads, arps, gates n stuff, and one only for mixing, playing, sequencing, drums and bass.

That was the start of the rave era as I remember it, somewhere in '92 '94.

And that was the context about DJs. During casual parties DJs are few time cheaper than employing a band, plus some can spin for hours. Bands sort of died in a way in my opinion because of that.

Anyway, almost anyone can learn how to spin, and anyone has their selection of tunes that will appeal to some ppl. So maybe by the lack of proper live performances, the electronic scene lost some creativity and art ? ...

Anyway, if anyone wants to form a band, I'm in

Yea but the whole point of EDM, or at least trance and techno oriented genres are sequenced electronic drums. But it would be wicked to have someone doing a hybrid performance, half sequenced, half live.

Faithless live at Pinkpop was amazing year's ago. I could imagine it would be pretty cool to see a live trance band, but the sound quality must be perfect I guess.
