That's the double edged sword with the VCI-100. Assuming you don't find it used for cheap, you quickly find yourself dropping a lot of dough for that with the extra ext. soundcard needed for it. Once you're up into the 500-600+ range, to me, it's a lot to spend for that
That's why I think you might be better off with something cheaper like Torq Mixlab which I mentioned above. Sure it's not made of metal, but it'll hold up just fine assuming you dont abuse it to all hell. Plus you dont need an ext. soundcard, and it's cheap enough so if you dont like it you're not really takin a big hit anyway. (I've been a Torq user for years now. It's solid.)
Just something to consider.

from what ive seen the torq mixlab misses the jog wheel, which is something i need for my kind of mixing. i know it has become a higher price than i expected, but if it's only the controller and the ext. soundcard - ill go for it (assuming nothing else is needed for this setup)
anyways, i wont ignore other recommendations

Haven't heard about that one. My advice is if you have the money, go for the Vestax + Sound Card. I assure you that you won't regret it, even if it's an expensive setup.
Having looked at all the things that the lads over at djtechtools.com are doing with the vci 100 i really do think it's a great piece of kit. Expensive for what it is but i have rarely if ever read bad reviews about the unit. It's a tank and perfect if you need something mobile.

Yes, the VCI-100 is like the Tech-12 of usb midi controllers.
