tampa bay area, in a nutshell: 99% hip hop, %1 everything else.
walk into any club in ybor, channelside, south tampa, or downtown st pete on any given friday/saturday night and you have a 99% chance of hearing that fuking god awful bullshit racist shallow commercial mainstream autotune music. |
Unfortunately I don't think that it's just this area... I think that most of the USA listens to complete garbage so they cater to the majority.
I don't even go out unless I know for a fact that I'm not going to hear that trash.

electronic music is a dying breed and it pains me to no end when i firmly believe this is the finest music on the planet
i think the key is to find the niche and try to support it... |
I also agree.

I've only been to the Venue a few times and the crowd seems to be a little on the older side. I personally prefer the younger crowd because I like younger chicks. But for Ferry, it will draw a good mix I think. Nevertheless, I never miss a Ferry Corsten show ever whenever he's in town. Trance is so rare here that I will hardly ever pass up the chance to hear and experience a good trance DJ spin whenever they come through.
As far as the edm club scene go, there isn't much of one here. HPC plays house on Tuesdays but not sure about weekends since I stopped going there. The crowd there sucks. They no longer enforce a dress code and that's very disturbing. I like the Kennedy. I feel kind of at home here. Mangroves is my other suggestion. It's a restaurant that converts into a bar/club at 10pm and very classy joint. Both places play a mix of top 40 and mainstream techno or whatever you wanna call it. Both places have no smoking except outside, which I think is what attracts me most. They both draw about the same type of crowd...young good looking professionals.
Hope this helps. |
Checked out Ferry at The Venue tonight and that place was one of the weirdest clubs I've ever been aside from the Dallas area of Texas. The club was in the oddest location as it sat right on the side of a highway and was surrounded by restaurants where you couldn't really park unless you drove to a nearby apartment complex and risked parking there. I also saw the valet guys beating on every car they were parking, including the new Infiniti G37-S directly in front of me. I saw the guy stomp the gas and slam a speed bump without hitting the brakes. If I was the owner and found out about that, I would be pissed. Anyway, the club was definitely filled with a lot of older people. I think the average age for a female was around 32 w/ a couple of younger broads in between. The setup for the DJ booth was like none that I have ever encountered before... directly perched above the main bar which sat on a on a tiny dance floor. People were constantly trying to get by so I kept being bothered by having to move. Besides those inconveniences, it was a fair evening, but if that's the only club that hosts big DJ's around here, that really sucks. I think I've been spoiled in the past. Bed time.
