Found this vid when looking for a track Megara vs DJ Lee played at Defqon.1 below, looks like fun:

Some tracks lean towards trance e.g.

Out Of The Past - Mystery (Fred Baker vs Vincent Gorczak Remix)

Think Hardstyle brings a lot of fun, like Happy Hardcore did some time ago.

Since none of you clowns have bothered to provide any decent attempt at an explanation, here's mine: hard trance has a more euphoric sound. It features a lot more syncopation than hardstyle and achieves a 'racy' feel through the spreading of melodic and percussive elements throughout the duration of a bar. It's uplifting and harmonic.

Hardstyle, on the other hand, tends to emphasise the first beat in each bar, placing melodic elements mostly there. The melodies are less euphoric and more screechy/scary, often sounding like demented carnival music. Hardstyle often employs distorted kick drums with a 'fuzzy' sound, while hard trance usually features tighter beats. As previously mentioned, hardstyle also tends to have a faster tempo, with hard trance ranging from 140 to 150 and hardstyle hovering more around 160. Despite this, hard trance sounds a lot more energetic/intense to me due to the increased amount of syncopation it employs.

Also, although hard house is easy for me to pick, I'm not sure to go about describing it. The most recognisable element is 'the hoover'. Listen to a sample of the sound here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_sound. Hard house also seems to feature a lot of simplistic off-beat basslines, which means that a single bass notes is placed on the third beat in each bar (kick drums are always on first).

can somebody explain the difference between HARDSTYLE and HARDTRANCE?

are they the same thing? and apparently, there's also HARDHOUSE, but i'm having a hard time imagining what that would sound like.

Hardstyle is about 30 bpm slower than hardcore, 140 - 160, not just close to 160. IMO compared to hardtrance it's not that much faster.
