Yes, listen to the people on here. Not saying your not, alot of them have years and years of experience (not going to mention any of your old timers). I mean sure you can take the easy way out but you may regret it later once you figure out your needs.
If you think you have it already sorted, then go with what you think already, as it will do the job of course, but thats all its going to do. If you want greater performance now and in the future, then as its been said, either get a mac, save and build a PC or perhaps upgrade the one you have if warranted.
And before going in to build one do some decent research. For me the option of building was not much more benificial then me buying a mac outright at the time, as the release of the 27" imac dropd the price of the older models considerably, making the 24" a more viable option for myself at that time. That being said you could stil pick up a top of range imac previous model with a little more over a $1000 and have a really good foundation.
yaddah yaddah,
edit: i am Mac biased also, oh if your really serious about building a PC check out some of the music stores online, they post ther specs up of ther units, you can do some price guidelines based on that and work it from there or buy a Mac...! But you really need to consider what you want from you machine, is it all virtual based or the other?

i have no problems using 1 13" laptop for producing. any less screen would be a problem i think though but this works for me. MBP is great imo.

IIRC, a 17" Dell laptop w/ 4gb RAM, Intel Core i5 Proc, 320gb HD will cost you ~$700. The video card is mostly unimportant as far as production goes and a decent soundcard won't really cost more that about $200. That's a better computer for less money than the op. I admit I don't know as much about computers as many other people on this board but that seems pretty good to me. |
Yeah, but dell are cheaper because they're notorious for using lower quality firewire chipsets, lower quality USB controllers, lower quality motherboards and pathetic build quality. Asus is known for using quite high quality componenents and being very reliable.
If you actually care about your music production adn want a laptop that will hold up, you probably won't go for dell.
Also, the asus I posted has a far stronger graphics card than the dells available, as well as an extra 2 CORES on the processor, how would you not pay an extra $400 for a whole 2 extra cores, faster clock and heaps better graphics, as well as increased reliability???
And the graphics card could very well start to make a big difference to audio production in the next 5 years as GPGPU stuff starts to take off. It hasn't yet, but direct compute and similar could have big implications for audio processing.
