a lot of the time it's about making a connection, if the opportunity presents itself. sounds like the opportunity didn't really present itself. It depends on the position, but you could also be overqualified. I don't know your field of study, but for example, you could be a damn good computer scientist when the job calls for a code monkey.
In any case, it happens. The way to overcome randomness is to just submit a massive number of applications. I've put in ~25 since late January, and doing more next week -- not surprisingly, the best response rate in terms of replies/interviews/offers has been from people I met in person. So, forget about that particular internship - shit happens. Submit lots of apps, and seize the opportunity to see recruiters face to face.
