hes asking for an anti-virus, not if he should buy another computer.
It's easy and pointless to recommend getting a mac, since if hasn't been living in the moon, he's probably aware they aren't as vulnerable to viruses as a PC. He's also probably aware of their pricing. Which is why he is asking for an anti-virus.

NOD32 is the best though, i used it on my PC. Even if you fail at getting it free, it's better than the others if you have to buy it. It barely used resources or was intrusive like, Norton for example.
AVG is decent if you can't get the other in my opinion.

Im using Avira after a small research ive made, it takes a small amount of resources, has a good reputation and its free.

AVAST is one of the best AV programs out there for spotting threats ,but it is really poor in handeling them.

Does anyone know of any on-line file scanner?

My PC is dog old and it's slow as fuck theses days (Athlon 64, 512MB RAM) so until I can buy a beat I am thinking of sacking AV off and only using an on-line file scanner when I download zip, etc. Also saves update hassle and start up time, etc.

Pointers?

You can try ClamWin. It's not an active scanner that's running and checking all the time (thus using minimal resources), but it gives an easy interface to do quick on-demand scans.
