Interesting results so far...

Another take on it is: Is attendance at these parties declining because of our scene shrinking (resulting in poorer Guv bookings), or is attendance dropping because of a failure by Guv to bring in interesting acts?

*Note: I am not talking about this year's Decadence specifically because I'm sure that will be rammed, but I'm talking about the general decline in attendance in Guv All-Access parties.

Yes.

Same thing has been happening in Montreal along the same timeline.

i think that the new generation are name whores.

And the big guys will draw the name whores everytime. The new generation wont go unless its on Z103 or Much.

The underground is shrinking....

HOWEVER....

Experience shows that if u have a gigantic commercial base, the underground usually benefits quite well.

So fear not, booking guetta and van burrin etc will inevitably have a GOOD effect on our scene.

Pretty much every teenager in canada knows of and is a fan of guetta and deadmau5 which is very very positive thing for the future of electronic music in this country.

In all fairness, tickets are expensive for an all access party, and people want to go see somebody they know they are going to like.

$60 for a concert for your favorite band is nothing, but that same $60 for a bunch of DJ's you have never heard of can be an expensive gamble.

Toronto is a music city, and we have a hell of a lot of shows, large and small to compete with.

Is attendence declining?
Or is it just TA attendence?

Compared to 5+ years ago, the number of All-Access events have declined (re: discontinuation of Ultra Spin), and I would wager to say that the number of people at the standard All-Access parties (Labour of Love, Decadence, Freedom) has also declined.

dude, there's less competition in the city these days. Don't you remember way back in the 99-03 era when the guv was relatively unopposed as 'the' place to party for EDM? It's the same thing now. No need to book talent when people will be coming thru your doors regardless.

Thanksgiving was really dead. I don't think they even opened the drink.

This is an interesting thread Graham.

And I am far too new in the scene to make any sort of comparison.

I think scene is getting smaller though - and thats why I welcome these mainstream parties. Got to get new blood somehow. I think Guv is smart for what they are doing.

I would agree that the all access events have been getting bad.

Last one I can say was really good was LOL2006, with Digweed, Cataneo, Luke Fair, Brad Copeland in the main room, Armin, Ferry, Junkie XL in kool haus, Tommie Sunshine, Boys Noize in the tent. Plus all the others that I didn't mention. What a a line-up that was.
