Well, I don't know how you'd go about replacing a firewire chipset build into the motherboard but anyway...

I'm not recommending mac at the moment by any means, I think they're the worst possible option right now. I'd recommend another manufacturer than dell though. Maybe toshiba, Asus, HP... not really sure which would be best.

the worst ? They might not be the best deal strictly looking at components but given the fact that you can run OSX , it is still a good value. Stop being such a drama queen.

That is if you actually want to use OSX.

I suppose your cracked software might not work on it. That or you are a big gaming nerd. PC audio developpers are still pretty much designing for XP with a slight nod to windows 7 to be safe. It is still the only real 100% stable operating system for PC. Windows 7 is considered beta as far as any professional studio is concerned.

But ya , if you don't want to use OSX , then a PC is where it is at.

I just did the switch recently and Windows 7 is stable as a rock to me.. even more so than XP i would say (been using XP for 6 years straight)

Everything is much faster, smoother, and my app can actually use more than 1,5 GB RAM. Windows 7 rocks!

Multitasking is a lot better too, i can export a huge project in Cubase, while working with another track in Wavelab at the same time, no hicks.

everything for you works great. Not every plugin or interface is supported. I still think it will be another year before they drop xp.

If you want to know if/when Apple are planning on updating their hardware, this website has generally been quite accurate.

What a ridiculous statement. You know I generally agree with you dude, but paying an extra grand or two to run OSX is a bit rich considering that not every VST is even supported and it really has no inherent advantages to XP or windows 7.

Don't come in here and start an OS war. We're talking about hardware here. I'd love to buy a mac for the hardware quality alone, and then run windows. But the hardware isn't up to scratch at the moment and thats all there is to it.

You won't regret it. I've got W7-64bit running since the day it hit the stores and it's working great. No problems whatsoever thus far, neither with vst's in Cubase, Renoise or Ableton Live. Except for Trillian, but that was a bug in the plugin itself when used with Ableton Live

With all this in mind anyone care to recommend a decent laptop?

I don't mind paying the premium if it's gonna last (I still work on a 5 year old pc, but right now it is getting hella slow and I could do with a laptop for work)
