Well you already have Cubase, I'm assuming you have some soft-synths and such. Right, so don't be an idiot and go buy a bunch of stuff that you're not going to understand. I made that mistake but luckily it was a small one, only about $200 worth. Sit at your computer for a while making some basic stuff, try recreating some very simple trance songs. It really helps to learn the structure of percussion elements in trance and different lead/bass patterns. If you're diging that then you will definitely like using physical controls. At the point where you think you've grown out of straight mouse/keyboard stuff buy a MIDI controller. Basically I'm saying that you should start small so that if you decide production isn't for you, you haven't spent much money.

Actually, go right ahead and buy a brand new synth. The economy needs a boost!

I was there my friend so don't worry to much. Every comment above make some sense - agree with most of this info, but for me (and maybe for you to) there are few things you really need to do/have:

1) good PC/Mac - your choice
2) interface card/hardware - so many to choose from ......
3) keyboard - your choice (something you feel comfortable to play on)
4) studio monitors - good quality (a lot of choices)
5) DAW - which you have already
6) Synth - Sylenth1, OmniSphare, Vangurd, .......... (many to choose)
7) Practice, practice, practice,.........
8) Patience, patience, patience, ........
9) Learn the basic .........

Cheers
