I second that motion. Those beat the AKG 240s any day to me. I've heard them both and I love the sound that comes out the DT880's. Best bang for the buck and sturdy.

For sound design, sony MDR 97509HD, but for mixing definatly open backed such as the akg 701, 240s or dt880 pro.

I've used the 800 pro's but anyone know the difference between the Premium 880 and the 880 pro?

them sony's look alright, they tend to have a broader frequency range over the others from what i can see.

They're what I have at home and I SWEAR by them. I don't really like mixing on them (as they're closed back) but the detail on them is stunning. I hear things on them in such clarity they put my monitors to shame.

I don't think there's a better pair of headphones for detail out there.

If mixing is your primary though though, go with open or at least semi open, such as the ones listed above.

I want them only for production Rann, so i plan to use them a lot. I will definitely check a pair out today when i head to town. do some comparisons, and im definitely after a clear detail repsonse from them.

thanks heaps fokes for the replies too,

I haven't used them for a prolonged period of time so can't comment on sound quality, but I didn't find them comfortable enough which was a deal breaker for me.

Oh, and fledz prompted me to add that the sony 7509HD are really comfy. The only thing is you can get a bit hot on the ears after prolonged use but that's with any closed backs really.

Interesting you mention Beyernynamic Dezma. I just started using my first pair of stuio headphones this week, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro, and I'm not sure what to think. I've never used a pair of studio headphones, only DJ headphones, so I don't have anything to compare it to but it just seems the mids and highs are very distinct and crisp but the bass seems a bit lost. I'm sure there is a breaking in period where you must adjust to using them until you know them, just like any setup so I'm going to give them some more time. Curious how would you compare DT 770s against the more expensive DT 880s you recommended? I have 30 days in which I can return these so I'd love to get your input.

30 day return policy thats not to bad at all. I yesterday tried some AKG's in particular due to pricing the 240mk2's i think they were and they went for 390aus, i compared them to sennheisar HD280pro and to my untrained ear they sounded very much the same and cost 219aus so i have considered gettn a pair of the sennheisars. Everywhere i seemed to have called after Rann's reconmendation didnt hav the sony's...

edit - from what i am reading too the sennheisar are more of a dj headphone! ahh decisons decisons,

Rann even though you reconmend the sony's everywher i went was telling me ther not for production. but i dont disagree with you at all, but its tuff to make a decision with so many opinions )-;

Who cares if its for djing or studio use, just go with what sounds better to you.

EDIT: brought out my AKG 240 MKII's just for one day to listen to my mp3 player and i got attacked, rushed and after the fight, bastards took my headphones, its good i still have my sony MDR-v700's.

Im actually eyeing the AKG 601's they look really good and only cost about $100 more than 240's.

Where the hell did you see the 240s for almost $400!?!?
You can get them for close to half that price.

EDIT - They are $295 at DJ Warehouse here , and I'm sure you can find them for even less.

Erm, every where I've ever used them or seen them used are studios or outside broadcast setups or even live sound situations.

even a google search has them listed everywhere as studio or professional monitoring headphones:

http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=sony...dc62da33e2ff469

Don;t know where you;re going but they're not giving you good info, probably because they don;t sell them and can only think they're trying to sell you something else.

I'll reiterate what I said earlier though:

Their detail is simply stunning - I hear things on them I can;t hear through my monitors but they are not accurate for mixing IMO, and it's mainly due to the fact they are closed back.
