I don't understand how anyone could focus on the voice of the narrator while watching something like that.

I couldn't give a flying fuck if it was Lady Gaga narrating. I watch it to learn the facts alongside amazing footage and images.

My fave part was the pebble frog insanity

When you watch documentaries for long enough, especially those with Attenborough narrating, you get extremely pissed off when someone tries to narrate in his place. It's the property of BBC, why try to fix something that's definitely not fucking broken?

In defense of some dumbass muricans, Attenborough says "shoal" instead of "school", it took me a while to figure that out.

you obviously don't understand how great a narrator Attenborough is. It would be like taking the greatest actor in the world and then replacing him with some annoying fat black chick.

The way Attenborough narrates is what gives these documentaries their magical and epic feeling.

I'd freak out if I had to listen to Oprah talk about komodo dragons.

Is Attenborough the same guy who does Blue Planet and all the Earth documentaries?

edit: ok I cleared it up. Yes he is epic.

This guy is great too - he gets so subtly excited.

And I thought Oprah's voice was pleasant.

I loved Planet Earth and really enjoyed the first two episodes of Life. I am hoping on the blu-ray, similar to Planet Earth, it will be Attenborough narrating and not the American counterpart. Like, honestly, she has a decent gravity to her voice that Weaver lacked, which makes Oprah a decent narrator, but I feel sometimes her interest in the subject matter is lacking, though this could simply be at any point I feel like she is going to say, OK pebble frog, look under your rock, because you now have the deed to a Pebble beach.

Missed this, but caught 3 episodes of Pacific. Mike Rowe is an excellent choice. Sigourney Weaver was good in PE.

You mean they modified a product to align it with the market's cultural reference points so they could sell more of a product they spent years making?

I thought Oprah would cheapen it for me, but in the end she did a decent job, although I don't doubt Attenborough's narration will add even more to it when I watch it again on my computer.

I was stunned at several points throughout both eps, wow'ing like a little kid. Even better than Planet Earth, which had already set the bar pretty high.

Discovery's reason for using Oprah...

quote:
"We thought that Oprah has that iconic voice," said W. Clark Bunting, president and general manager of the Discovery Channel. "And after hearing a little bit of the read, we just simply said, 'We think this is the person who can really bring life to "Life."'"

And when asked how much of the decision was based solely on name recognition...

quote:
"I think that, you know, part of the decision is really the quality and the timbre of her voice. The reading is amazing, and above and beyond that, Oprah was a huge fan of 'Planet Earth.' I think, if there was one super fan for 'Planet Earth'. This is something that she was very excited about, wanted to be part of, and we were just absolutely delighted and excited to have her as part of this project."

In reality...

quote:
Oprah Winfrey will add a cable television network to her stable of media properties in 2009 with the formation of “OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.”

The network will be formed in a joint venture between Harpo Productions and Discovery Communications, the company announced today. The channel will displace the eight-year-old Discovery Health Channel in more than 68 million homes. The channel will be coordinated with Ms. Winfrey’s Web site, Oprah.com.
