Another great wmc in the books. So great meeting some new faces, and hanging with some old ones. The people are what made the parties this year for me. Once again, sleep and food were at a premium all week, and even though i don't hit the 'party favors' hard, my brain feels like mush right now... so here goes an attempt at some sort of short summary.
TUESDAY:
Checked out the view from our place and it was everything we expected and more. We'll get some pics up eventually. Later on in the week Ultra made it even that much better. Eventually hit up Markus, who played a very good set, which was to be expected. Met a lot of new faces, and everybody was having a blast. I was very excited to get wmc started, so probably went a little overboard on the drinking for the first night.
WEDNESDAY:
Back over to SoBe for some lunch and then dip in. Caught the end of Tyas which was quite good. Menno started slow, but the last half of his set was very enjoyable. Left during cosmic gate to get some more food. Returned for a bit of their set, and everybody was having a good time. Blank and Jones were the highlight for me, because I had low expectations and they played so hard. Gareth Emery is amazing. Sander van Doorn was the special guest and actually suprised me, since I've never been a huge fan, but I was thouroughly impressed and made me excited to see him in the future.
So, back to the condo for a few before I headed to Shine for Ovum. I was really excited to catch voorn vs fanciulli. No line outside, but the place was absolutely packed inside. I headed out to the pool area to get some air and meet up with some people. In the past, it had never been a problem to go out there and then back in the same door. This time, however, they made us go back around to the main entrance, and, wouldn't ya know it, line was long and not moving. In retrospect, I think we gave up way too fast, lol.... So I ended up eventually making my way over to L'Folie, where a few friends were checking out Christopher Lawrence. CL was done by the time I got there, place far from busy, and Judge Jules made his best attempt to empty it some more. Sean Tyas ended up playing a pretty banging set to very few people. We actually walked back into shine with about 15 minutes left in the party. Place was still very busy, and, as usual at shine, there were at least 68 djs in the booth, haha. Threw around some hotel party or Space Terrace ideas, but ended up calling it a night.
THURSDAY
Only two nights in, and I already wake up feeling under the weather with some serious sinus trouble. The rest of the day would be a struggle energy wise, but wtf, it's wmc. Dropped off tickets to the CG yacht and met some more people. It looked like there was a good crowd getting on, and I was already regretting choosing in favor of Sasha and Digweed. Oh well, too late now, so on over to the yacht we went. Had been on this party before, and this one was almost, minute-by-minute exactly the same. The food was excellent again, and the drinks were flowing, but the novelty has worn off. I'm sure I was affected by not feeling so great, too. Still, it was relaxing and the music was good.
Again, back to the apartment to get ready for Anjunabeats. Place was absolutely the most packed I've ever seen it. Temperature in the main room was almost unbearable. Checked out the anjunadeep room for a bit, before catching the end of Above and Beyond. Was really excited to catch Gareth in a club for the first time, and he did not disappoint, laying down one of the best sets of the conference for me. On fire from start to finish. Wippenberg followed, and it seemed like half of his set was chakala, haha. Seriously, he played a couple different versions of it, each lasting what felt like 20 minutes. The rest of his set wasnt too bad, but the place was starting to empty out. Tyas banged out the closing set and kept me moving until close.
FRIDAY:
Woke up plenty early enough to make it to the lunch meetup, but killed some time hoping for the pouring rain to stop. Finally strolled over that way, and didn't recognize any faces out front. So, decided to eat out back on the patio instead. After lunch we made our way to the Desyn yacht, and were very unhappy to find out that the booth would be inside. Obviously, they had to take precautions because of the weather, but it was still disappointing, and I think it took away from the entire cruise. But, anyway, can't argue with free bar, so started drinking and enjoying the tunes. I'm not a big fan of Sander K, and he did nothing to sway me this time, but Desyn was good as always. Was fun to see them tag team again, too.
And, deja vu, back to the apartment to drink and get ready for Space. We killed too much time and didn't end up getting to space until close to 1:30. Place was an absolute clusterf#ck as expected. Bouncers were contradicting themselves and couldn't point anybody in the right direction based on pre-sales, will call, or whatnot. Finally, around 2 or so, we come to find that there was a seperate door the entire time for ticket holders, which I guess the bouncers had a tough time expressing, haha. Our group was actually the last few people to get in this way, and we didn't have to pay any extra, which was nice. Sander had just gone off the decks and PVD started doing his thing. I wasn't blown away, but there were some sections of his set that flowed quite nicely. He still lost me a few times, but I've come to expect that nowadays. I didn't mind, though, as it gave me time to check out the loft and terrace a couple times. I was sad to learn that Chris Lake had gone on earlier. Was quite impressed the few time I checked out the loft, though, as Adam Beyer and Paul Ritch both sounded amazing in there. I returned to the main room in anticipation of GO. I like Giuseppe a lot, and I've seen him a couple times before. When I have, he's usually played very melodic trance the entire time. This was not one of those times. Besides a couple tracks, and a long breakdown or two, he played the space mainroom perfectly.... banging it out from start to finish. There were a couple times I thought that it was a return to Nu NRG, because of how hard it was. One of my fav sets of conference. Somebody followed him, not sure who, I'm assuming it was a vandit artist or a space resident. During this set a few of us decided to brave the mass of people attempting to get to the tererace. It took a very long time as we were squished, pushed, yelled at, and so forth, just waiting to get up there. Too many people were being stupid, trying to push through the crowd... then every so often a group would be escorted through, probably after buying a table or something. Anyway, they finally just opened both doors and let every body up, which was strange. I think it's because the techno loft had just finished up, so some people must have left. So we arrived for the last hour of Mark Knight, who was teasing the crowd as he is prone to do. Place was having a good time as always. Chus and Ceballos took to the decks at 8 o'clock and rocked the place at least until I left, which was somewhere going on 11. I couldn't move anymore, or I would have stayed. I actually felt some shit crackle down my spine and throughout my back, and my knees felt like they had run out of cartilege. Still, the music kept me moving, and I've grown to love every C&C set I hear. Plus, it's always entertaining being relatively sober compared to those hardcore people on the terrace at that time, haha.
SATURDAY
After limping back to the condo and showering, I made a half ass attempt to take a nap. After maybe an hour or so, I knew I had to get moving in order to deliver my Ultra ticket to someone, and make it to the discoteca yacht. I was exhausted, but still excited for the party, because it seems I always have plans when Luke Fair plays during wmc. As it turns out, the sound guys had been running a little late, so the boat was about an hour behind schedule. We finally boarded, and after a couple drinks, we found a nice sofa-bed to crash on for a bit. It was perfect to relax there for a while, giving my legs and back a much needed rest. Later on, after Luke Fair had come on, I did try to move a little, but it was difficult to say the least. The music was good though, and we had a fun time.
After returning to the condo, the plan was to get a little rest before Ferry. I was about to lay down when I checked Ferry's twitter page and found out that Solarstone was opening. Damnit!! So, in a haze of exhaustion and tipsiness I ran out the door and walked to Karu-y (or whatever it's called now). The organization outside was a little atypical for a made event, starting with a will-call girl that seemed to be fucked on something. After dealing with her, a few of us had to convince the bouncers that the pink wristbands she had given us were, in fact, our tickets into the party. I finally got it, and Solarstone was warming up to an empty room. It was a little depressing that not only was he given such a short time slot, but that half of his set was with the volume turned way down. He made the most of it and played accordingly, picking things up as the room got fuller, finally cranking it out at the end for Cosmic Gate. Caught some of cosmic gate, as well as some of Hernan outside, before Ferry took to the decks and played for three hours. It was a good set, not great. Not exactly the flow I have come accustomed to from him, but it was still good. Some of his mixing seemed off at the end, and I'm pretty sure he was a little drunk when he kept getting on the microphone. Sied van Riel closed the night, and some of the tracks he played I quite enjoyed.
SUNDAY
After more sleep than I had gotten the previous four days combined, it was nice to sleep into the afternoon. We finally made our way over to SoBe for the day, grabbing some lunch and delicious wet willie's libations. After checking out the witty tunes party, we finished the day at Nikki Beach. The hed kandi guys were doing there thing, and everybody was enoying themselves. I think bottle service is ridiculous most of the time, but seeing as it was the end of the week, we decided to get some vodka and relax at a table It was a really nice place to chill and discuss plans for the evening. Hed Kandi finished up and the music took a nose dive, imo, so we left. The space terrace and shine were options, and I also had a ticket to Pryda. But, after the bottle of vodka it seemed like most of us were pretty tired and satisfied with the week. We found out late that Carl Cox was playing again at L'Folie, but I think it was another R&B/hiphop set like last year, so it really didn't appeal to us.
I finally ventured out to check out towards SET to see how things were. I got there and there was a large crowd trying to get in to no avail. It was absolutely packed and they weren't letting anybody in. Some guy showed interest in buying my ticket, but decided against it, since ticket holders weren't even getting through. After waiting a few more minutes, about five ticket holders in front of me got in, so I squezzed through just as the bouncer replaced the rope behind me. As I was handing my ticket to the cashier, I heard another guy tell the bouncer "no more", and "one out, one in". So, even though I was exhausted, I felt somewhat privileged that my ticket did not go to waste. I would soon feel even better about it, as Prydz thoroughly impressed me from start to finish. I had heard a few sets of his prior to Miami, so I knew a little of what to expect, but this was much better than what I expected. He came on very shortly after I entered, and I didn't really stop moving until he was finished. I have no idea what kept me going, except for the fact that much of his set reminded me of the progression of a trance set. I can see how this might annoy a househead, but as a tranceaddict, the breakdowns, song selection, and fist pumping were exactly what I needed to enjoy myself. The place was going nuts the entire time, and I'm still thinking back on it today. Probably my fav set of the conference.
MONDAY
After Prydz, I showered and layed down for about a half hour before I had to drag myself up and out to the airport. It probably goes without saying that the rest of my day was horrible, haha. I took every opportunity to lay my ass down in the airports and try to get some kind of sleep on the planes. After arriving home, I had to jump in my car and head straight to a 4 hour class. Luckily the professor cut it short by an hour, because I spent most of the time trying to figure out how to get my eyes to focus, lol. I stuffed my face and passed out around 9pm, only to wake up around 1pm this afternoon. I could not get out of bed for about a half hour as I had a pain in my back like I've never felt before (read above about the "cracking" I heard on the terrace). It's starting to feel a little bit better tonight, so hopefully some rest will clear it up. I've got a couple more classes this week, but luckily I don't return to work until Monday, so I should be able to recover.
Again, everybody I hung with and met made this another great wmc. Hope to stay in touch with all of you and thank you for the memories. My facebook is below.
