Some good soundfonts can also be helpful... But real good ones are hard to come by.

Hypersonic 2 is dead, its called HALionSonic now!

Some years ago I started with sampled piano sounds. In the beginning it was fine, but sometimes it just did not feel right. that's why I moved to a virtual plug-in. Well I m not a big fan of the native instruments versions and even tried some other - but finally I can just recommend pianoteq as really good plug-in.

I know that some other guys who are into trance use pianoteq too, so you may check their test-version.

Nexus has a piano "Terminator theme piano" or something like that that includes a smooth strings on the preset, add some delay/reverb and not sounds bad

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet, but reason has a realy good refill, can't remember the name of it, but they have hypersampled a steinway grand, steinway upright and one other piano.
You can pick from 5 different mic placements and mix as you see fit.

I love it!

I agree 100% Some of my favorite pianos come from Nexus. My other favorite pianos come from Kontakt 4's stock library, and I recently bought a Kurzweil PC3X, which has the best piano sounds I've ever owned (unfortunately for the OP, it's obviously not a VST).

A few other instruments to consider for trance pianos:

- Dimension Pro (very versatile and tons of pianos)
- Wusikstation
- Omnisphere (has some great factory piano patches, and many other piano samples in the library that can be edited/layered for some excellent trance pianos)
