I think that having an OS and a set of applications that were designed from the ground up with multi-touch in mind is what helps differentiate the iPad from netbooks/laptops.
Part of me can see the appeal in a device like the iPad for a casual-computing thing. I don't think it'll ever replace desktops/laptops - and it's not really meant to.
Doubt I'll be picking up one any time soon. I have an iTouch that I never use any applications on, so can't say I'm fully sold on touch interfaces yet --- but I do think that there might be some promise for this style of device.
Almost seems like the electronic equivalent of flipping through a magazine on a patio.
The whole Apple store-approval lock-in thing rubs me the wrong way. I think a device like this is really limiting its potential by having to jump through the loops that Apple puts up.

If the iPad had a Pixel Qi screen instead of that admittedly very, very nice LCD, I'd be all over it. As it stands, I'd wanna lay out on the patio in the sun and mess around with it, and LCDs just don't jive with that kind of thing.

The Z-Series Atom in the HP Slate will be the death of that machine. It is just too goddamn slow to do any real good.
But hey. It's got a USB port. Holy SHIT!

that's already a whole lot more than what the iPad offers. Seriously, if the iPad wasn't so ass-backwards with features, featured a full-fledged OS like Vdub mentioned then I could see this some arguments to buy this thing. As it stands now it lacks features that a regular netbook has, and lacks features that an iPhone already has. So whats the point?

Because it's meant to be super thin, have enormous battery life, a screen of previously unseen high quality in a device at such a "low" price, and was designed from the ground up with a touch interface. Among tons of other things.
Having Windows 7 on a slate like that is great and all, but if you're gonna run actual Windows I'd want a real hardware keyboard.
For messing around on the internet, I'm probably gonna wait for more Android tablets, or of course, ChromeOS tablets. My HP Mini 1000 netbook does fine for that right now.

Hahah, truth. I dunno, I just really worry about the HP Slate specs and how it's gonna perform with that custom UI running over Win7. 1GB RAM and a really shitty Atom? It's not very promising.
